Yellow River State Forest

What is there to do in Northeast Iowa anyway? My thoughts as my fiancé and I were looking for a home across the river from our home state of WI. House hunting in WI was becoming a bit of a bust and while I was open to the idea of moving to Iowa, I never thought it would actually happen…..but here we are now living in Northeast Iowa and absolutely loving it! One of my favorite spots in the area (that I am lucky enough to get to explore on a daily basis) is the Yellow River State Forest.

The Yellow River State Forest lies in Allamakee County near Harpers Ferry, IA. The forest contains more than 8,900 acres spread across 6 different units with tons of outdoor recreation opportunities. Each of the units offers something slightly different than another depending on the season. Camping, hiking/backpacking, horseback riding, trout fishing and mountain biking are popular at the Paint Creek Unit which is the largest of the 6 units. There is also the Paint Rock Unit, Luster Heights Unit, Yellow River Unit, Mudhen Unit (only accessible by boat), and the Waukon Junction Unit.
